Mackay's very own Gridiron team
Mackay's very own Gridiron team
Mackay Gridiron was established in 2017, after a successful open day showed there was a lot of local interest in the sport. Jim Cobb had moved to Australia from the United States in 2001 and with his strategic mind and a passion for the sport, he took on the role of Head Coach of the Mackay Mavericks for the first three seasons.
Just one month after taking on the role of Head Coach, Jim was diagnosed with male breast cancer at just 49 years of age. He refused to miss a single day of training, even attending a session the day after his mastectomy. That was his way of showing his dedication to the sport and what he expected from his players. Gridiron was a great distraction for Jim while going through this unexpected journey and he was discharged as cancer free in 2022. Gridiron played a big part in his healing process as it was something he was extremely passionate about.
Forming a new club was not easy. It required people who had time and dedication. I took on the roll of President and the time required to get the club established was that of a full-time job. A committee was eventually formed of players and their family.
Mackay Mavericks were the third gridiron team to form in Regional Queensland joining the Townsville Cyclones and the Cairns Falcons. During the clubs first year, it was obvious to Jim and Karen that this team was not just a sporting team, but a place for men to come and share their burdens and get support from their teammates. The greatest part about Gridiron, is that in order to win, you have to work as a team. Supporting and encouraging each other is key. The Mackay Mavericks aren’t just a team, they are a family.
And here we are in 2023, about to commence our sixth season, with Head Coach Bradley Somerville. This will be Brads second season in the roll of Head Coach after taking the team to the Reef Bowl last season.
